Abstract

This article deals with the Aristotelian theory of space from the viewpoint
of Muslim philosophers. Presenting the background of this theory, the
reasonings of the philosophers agreeing / disagreeing with the existence of
space are studied. Explaining different hypotheses on the true meaning of
space, the article studies one of the outstanding theories of space, i.e.
Aristotel's theory of containing surface, in accordance with the viewpoints of
the great Muslim philosophers, clarifying the shortcomings of this theory in
ascertaining the necessity of space for all existants in the physical world
